The Physics of Fishing: Light Refraction and the Science of Lure Color

To the human eye standing on a boat dock, a soft plastic fishing bait looks exactly the same as it does on a retail pegboard. But the second that bait breaches the surface of the water, a massive shift in physics occurs.

Water doesn't just hold fish; it acts as a highly complex filter that bends, scatters, and systematically steals light. For custom bait builders and serious anglers, understanding the science of light refraction isn't just an academic exercise. It is the secret to triggering strikes when big fish refuse to bite.

By understanding how light behaves underwater, we engineered our proprietary Hypershift pigments and Apex Crystals to work with physics, rather than fighting against it. Here is the science behind why it works.

The Deep-Water Reality: How Water Steals Color

The moment sunlight hits the surface of a lake or river, it encounters refraction: the bending of light waves as they pass from the air into a denser medium (water). As light travels deeper into the water column, it undergoes absorption and scattering.

Water absorbs different wavelengths of the light spectrum at different depths, systematically stripping away colors one by one:

  • Red wavelengths: The longest, weakest wavelengths on the visible spectrum. Red is completely absorbed and disappears in as little as 10 to 15 feet of clear water, turning into a dull, lifeless gray or black.
  • Orange and yellow wavelengths: These are swallowed next, fading away between 20 and 40 feet.
  • Green and blue wavelengths: The shortest, highest-energy wavelengths. They penetrate the deepest, which is why deep water naturally appears blue or green to our eyes.

Because of this rapid wavelength loss, a standard, flat-colored soft plastic that looks vibrant in your hand can completely lose its visual signature at 15 or 20 feet. It becomes a flat, uninspired silhouette. To a bass using its highly advanced, predatory vision to detect contrast and movement, the bait simply stops looking alive.

The Solution: Engineering with Hypershift and Apex Crystals

We recognized that mass-produced baits often rely on standard, flat pigments that quickly turn monochromatic at depth. To break through this physical limitation, we introduced two advanced particulate additives into our premium plastisol formulas: Hypershift Pigments and Apex Crystals.

1. Hypershift Pigments: Exploiting Light Angles and Refraction

Standard glitter or flakes simply reflect light at a single, static angle. If the sun hits it right, it flashes; if the bait turns, the flash disappears.

Our Hypershift technology uses multi-layered, microscopic silica flakes that act like tiny prisms. As light refracts through the water and hits the bait from different directions, the Hypershift particles shift their color signature based entirely on the angle of view and the angle of the light.

This mimics the natural iridescence of live forage. When a real shad or minnow darts through the water column, its scales don't remain a static silver. They flash green, violet, and pearl as the fish turns. Hypershift reproduces this dynamic light shift organically, so the bait constantly alters its hue as it rolls and quivers, keeping the presentation dynamic rather than flat.

2. Apex Crystals: Maximum UV Capture and Depth Luminosity

Where standard pigments fail as light fades, our custom Apex Crystals take over. These are highly specialized, structural micro-crystals blended directly into the core of the plastic.

Apex Crystals are engineered to capture the high-energy, short-wave UV light that penetrates deep into the water long after visible red and orange light have vanished. Instead of letting that deep-water light scatter and disappear, Apex Crystals act as internal reflectors that illuminate the bait from the inside out.

By bouncing light internally through the fluid, clear plastisol, Apex Crystals make the bait pop with natural contrast even in low-light environments, such as heavily stained water, early morning dawn, overcast skies, or deep brush piles. The color depth and "pop" of your custom colorway stay vibrant and visible exactly where the fish are holding.

The On-the-Water Advantage

A bass doesn't think in terms of physics, but it reacts instantly to the visual triggers it has relied on for thousands of years. It looks for the subtle, shifting sheen of moving baitfish scales and the high-contrast glimmer of life.

By using the science of light refraction to our advantage, our custom lures don't just sit in the water column. They interact with it. With Hypershift changing hues dynamically on the move and Apex Crystals maximizing underwater visibility, you are throwing a bait that stays alive, stays visible, and triggers more aggressive strikes when the pressure is on.
